Cannes' ban on flats on red carpet, experts weigh in on harms of high heels

Film festival organisers sparked controversy this week when it emerged a group of women, some of whom had medical conditions, were reportedly banned from screenings for wearing flat shoes. Dubbed flatgate, the scandal cast a shadow over the annual Cannes film festival, provoking outcry from some of Hollywood's leading actresses. Emily Blunt led the charge, but etiquette expert William Hanson later told MailOnline flat-shoed women were breaking the dress code, which is (and always has been) Black Tie.  While it is unclear what the fashion police had the most problem with - the lack of heels or the idea of flat shoes with rhinestones - the incident does raise some important questions about wearing footwear that isn't very good for you. 18 states vow to embark on industrial action

Imminent strike is said to be looming in 18 states following the inability of some state government to pay their workforce for some months. The General Secretary of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Dr. Peter Ozo-Eson, said that the strike has started in Plateau State, adding that a similar exercise will begin in Cross River State and others on Monday. The states owing salaries or pensions are Abia, Akwa Ibom, Bauchi, Benue, Cross River, Ekiti, Imo, Jigawa, Kano, Katsina, Kogi, Ogun, Ondo, Osun, Oyo, Plateau, Rivers and Zamfara states. However, Adamawa, Anambra, Bayelsa, Borno, Delta, Edo, the FCT, Gombe, Kaduna, Kwara, Lagos, Nasarawa, Niger, Sokoto and Taraba are not indebted to their workers. The Punch

DC police arrest suspect in quadruple mansion murder case

Daron Dylon Wint is a certified welder and worked for family's company, American Iron Works Police have arrested a man they believe held a family and housekeeper hostage in their Washington DC home before killing them. Daron Dylon Wint, 34, who had previously worked for the victims' family business, was detained late Thursday in the US capital. He is accused of killing the four victims and setting the house on fire. Police refused to confirm reports Mr Wint was identified by DNA from the crust of a pizza delivered to the home. Savvas Savopoulos, 46, chief executive of American Iron Works, was found dead in his family's home in Woodley Park, northwest Washington, just blocks away from the home of Vice-President Joe Biden. Police discovered his body alongside those of his wife Amy, 47, his 10-year-old son Philip and housekeeper Veralicia Figueroa, an El Salvador national. GEt set for MTV Africa Music Awards 2015, July 18

The 2015 edition of the MTV Africa Music Awards (MAMA) will once again hold at the International Convention Centre (ICC) of Kwazulu-Natal Province of Durban, South Africa, on July 18. This is disclosed at a news conference held simultaneously in Lagos and Durban on Thursday by representatives of Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN) and officials of the government of Kwazulu- Natal. The 2014 edition of the MAMA, which saw Nigeria's Davido crowned the 'Artiste of the Year', was also held in Durban. According to the organisers, the awards ceremony, which is in its 5th season will also be used to commemorate the 10th year anniversary of VIMN and its channel MTV Base in Africa. They said that MAMA 2015 would have 'Evolution' as its theme and would award musicians and achievers who had made the most impact on African youth culture over the last 12 months.
