Here comes the new US-approved "female Viagra"

Hide your kids, hide your excuses—there's a "female Viagra" pill on the loose. The Food and Drug Administration has approved the first prescription drug to enhance a woman's sexual drive today. The drug—Flibanserin, otherwise marketed as "Addyi," from Sprout Pharmaceuticals—is actually the first drug approved to treat a flagging or absent libido for premenopausal women. Although it's been dubbed "female Viagra" by the masses, that's not entirely accurate. Viagra and other drugs available for men are approved to help achieve erections, or to treat certain deficiencies of testosterone, not to increase desire. Futhermore, while Viagra is taken by men shortly before engaging in the no-pants dance, therefore stimulating a physical response, Addyi is a pill that would be taken each night to produce a response in the brain. However, there's no argument that Addyi is definitely targeted more at the female consumer. The pill is primarily designed to assist premenopausal women regain their sex drive by boosting levels of certain brain chemicals. Oh, and did you see that the pills are pink? E!
