"I am not a religious fanatic, "says Buhari

Buhari-2015

PRESIDENTIAL candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Maj.-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (rtd), has faulted the notion in certain quarters that he is an Islamic fanatic.
Speaking when a group of pastors under the aegis of Northern Christian Leaders Eagle Eyes Forum endorsed his bid for the presidency in Abuja yesterday, he swore that he never had disdain for adherents of the Christian religion.
Buhari, elated by the endorsement, said the wrong perception about his attitude towards fellow Nigerians of the Christian faith were deliberately being orchestrated by the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to score political gains.
Flanked by his running mate, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, he assured that if given the opportunity, he would have no personal religious agenda and would not entertain, consider or promote any religious agenda.
Stating that his track record in the military and as a politician is there for all discerning Nigerians to crosscheck whether he was a religious bigot or not, he added that even as Head of State, appointments were done purely on merit as there were more Christians than Muslims in his cabinet.
He assured that he would not condone any initiative that seeks to promote one religion over the other, nor would he Islamize or Christianise Nigeria.
“I feel the urge to communicate some of my personal vision and thoughts to the people of our great country, especially on the question of religion, a sensitive matter for many citizens that has become the most frequently used tool by the ruling party,” he said.
