FourFiveSeconds From the White House? Yeezus Take the Wheel?  Kanye West  declared at the 2015 VMAs on Sunday, Aug. 30, that he plans to run for president in 2020, so naturally, lots of people -- including White House Press Secretary  Josh Earnest  -- are wondering what the rapper's campaign might look like. Earnest was traveling aboard Air Force One with  President Barack Obama  on Aug. 31 when he was asked about West's out-of-left-field announcement, which came at the end of his long, rambling acceptance speech for MTV's Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award. Acknowledging the "Black Skinhead" performer's political bid, Earnest told the  Associated Press  he looks "forward to seeing what slogan he chooses to embroider on his c...

Boko Haram and President Buhari

For some time now, there has been a persistent buzzing in my ears. First, I thought it was bathing attempts gone awry. A closer observation showed it occurs at particular occasions, especially when I hear ‘the Presidency’, ‘negotiate’ and ‘Boko Haram’ in the same sentence. I have refrained from commenting on the Presidency’s resolve to negotiate with Boko Haram for so long. I did that specifically to know if there are some aspects of this strategic move I have missed; as change is the only fixed dynamic in our existence. Probably, there are fresh policy thrusts among international actors on the global stage unbeknown to us to justify the move. No more. An event occurred that mandated that the buzzing nearly splintered my ears a few days ago. I just have to speak before forever holding my silence on this matter. This come-to-Jesus moment surfaced when the news filtered in that Abubakar Shekau is still alive and remains the head of Boko Haram weeks after Chadian authorities exultantl...

#NottingHillCarnival2015 is here! 10 things to do at Europe's biggest street carnival

First time at the biggest street carnival in Europe? Here's what you need to know. 1. Forget the Tube map During Notting Hill Carnival, some Underground stations are temporarily shut to avoid congestion. If you want to avoid wandering the streets of West London for hours, don't "wing it" – plan your journey home in advance using Transport for London's Journey Planner. And don't even think about driving. 2. Ditch the heels You'll be on your feet all day, so comfort is key. Think closed-toe flats (flipflops will probably break and aren't the best for wading through rubbish at the end of the day). But don't forget: it is carnival! Leave the pastels in the wardrobe and bring out the colour. Accessorise with flags, whistles, crazy hats... anything goes. 3. Pack your carnival essentials Tissue in case the portaloo has run out? Check. Wet wipes for your post-jerk chicken fingers? Check. Bottle of water to hydrate after wild dancing? Check. The Ca...

Leverkusen have already signed his replacement in Slovenia international Kevin Kampl from Borussia Dortmund. Born in Chuncheon, the capital of Gangwon Province, Son ? nicknamed 'Sonny' ?- joined Hamburg's youth set-up at the age of 16 and first played for South Korea in 2010. After initial quarell, Nicki Minaj opens VMAs

According to a press release from MTV, Nicki Minaj will open the 2015 Video Music Awards on Sunday. Minaj teased the announcement earlier on Instagram and Twitter, with a Moonman in a sonogram. (Take that, false Nicki pregnancy rumors!) Nicki later deleted the teaser and tweet but it's definitely happening. You'll recall back in July, Nicki made headlines when she called out the VMAs in a serious of tweets that called into question why her immensely popular video for "Anacoda" was overlooked in the Video of the Year category. Taylor Swift jumped into the conversation, which caused the Internet to break and die. We built a new Internet, Taylor and Nicki made up (they totes love each other now) and on Thursday MTV announced she was slated to open the Video Music Awards popularly called VMAs. While her performance is sure to be one of the best things about the show (seriously, have you even recovered from her "Anaconda" performance last year?), things mi...

Outrage as Buhari appoints more Northeners into his cabinet

THERE was an outrage in the ruling All Progressives Congress on Thursday over the announcement of new appointments by President Muhammadu Buhari. Leaders of the APC, who spoke to The PUNCH, complained that the appointments tilted in favour of the North and said the party must move fast to cope with the backlash of expected rumblings in the polity. “The President does not consult before making most of these appointments and I can tell you that Nigerians are going to term the party and the President as a northern party and the President of Northern Nigeria,” a leader of the party said to one of our correspondents late on Tuesday. Buhari, according to a statement by his Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, on Thursday approved the appointment of Babachir David Lawal from Adamawa State as the Secretary to the Government of the Federation. He also named Mr. Abba Kyari from Borno state as his Chief of Staff. Other appointments approved by the Presid...

Nigerian lawmakers oppose Senate's probe of Lamorde, anti-graft agency's boss

A group of senators of the All Progressives Congress, under the aegis of Unity Forum, have risen against the decision of the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions to investigate the chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ibrahim Lamorde, over alleged diversion of N1 trillion recovered by the commission. The APC senators echoed the position of the Peoples Democratic Party caucus in the Senate, which dissociated its members from the probe on Monday, calling on the committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions to shelve the investigation. But in a statement jointly signed by Senators Ahmed Lawan, George Akume, Abu Ibrahim and Barnabas Gemade, the APC senators said on Wednesday that for a petition to be discussed in the Senate or House of Representatives, it must be channelled through a member of the House of Representatives or a senator. “In standard parliamentary practice, a petition is routed through either a senator or member of the H...

I am not attacking Fashola- Asiwaju

The National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, has distanced himself from the recent attacks against former Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State. Tinubu added that the attacks were being sponsored by the Peoples Democratic Party. Tinubu, who is a former governor of Lagos State, said this in a statement issued by his media office on Wednesday. Fashola, according to a report on the state government’s website, spent N78.3m on his personal website, www.tundefashola.com < http://www.tundefashola.com/ > and N139m to construct two boreholes at the Lagos House, Ikeja, when he was governor. There had been speculations that the reports were being sponsored by Tinubu as part of efforts to discredit him and deny him the opportunity of being appointed a minister by President Muhammadu Buhari. However, Tinubu said the allegations against him (Tinubu), were the handiworks of mischief makers sponsored by the PDP. The statement partly read, “The PDP is just...

Kano Pillars reiterates its readiness to defend title

Image
Kano Pillars Nigeria Professional Football League champions, Kano Pillars, have said their record home loss on Sunday does not mean they are out of the title race. Pillars saw their 12-year unbeaten home match run in the NPFL come to an end when they lost 2-1 to Nasarawa United at the Sani Abacha Stadium on Sunday. The loss was the second consecutive one they have suffered under coach Mohammed Babaganaru. But Pillars’ Media Officer, Idris Malikawa, said although the loss was sad one for the club but it was a celebration for the country’s football thereby making the club proud. “The record that was broken on Sunday was a very big one and Kano Pillars are proud to have such a record as theirs,” Malikawa said. “No club will be happy to lose a match especially one on its own turf but this loss was a special one so it leaves us with memories to cherish as the club with the longest home unbeaten streak in the Nigerian league.” “He added that the club’s coach, Babaganaru...

How APC won 2015 presidential elections - Lai Mohammed

THE  ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) said the transparent and open manner in which its presidential candidate, Muhammadu Buhari, emerged was the major factor in its eventual victory in the March 28 presidential election rather than money politics. The party stated that there was no way the APC would have received the kind of widespread support within and outside the party in the run-up to the elections, if the process that led to Buhari’s emergence were not open and transparent. Speaking at the 55th Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), in Abuja, the National Publicity Secretary of the party, Alhaji Lai Mohammed stated that during the campaign, the PDP outgunned the APC on many flanks, including money spent on campaign and advertisements. “The then ruling party outspent the opposition in the area of advertisements, whether in the print or electronic media. According to a report credited to Compliance and Content Monitoring Limi...

Unprecedented! Nigerian Senators, Reps members agree to pay cut

Image
Saraki, Dogara Members of the National Assembly on Wednesday said they welcomed the decision of the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission to review downward the salaries and allowances of members of the National Assembly. The House of Representatives said a pay cut would be a “relief” to lawmakers in many respects, including restoring the dignity of the legislature in the country. It noted that it was “disgusting” to hear Nigerians call their legislators “looters” and “thieves” on account of the salaries and allowances worked out for them by an agency of the government empowered by law to do so. The Chairman of RMAFC, Mr. Elias Mbam, had on Tuesday disclosed that a new pay package, reflecting cuts in the remuneration of public service officers would be released in September. Mbam specifically mentioned the National Assembly as an arm of the public service that would be affected in the planned pay cut. Mbam, who spoke with State House correspondents...

NDLEA The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency on Wednesday stormed and occupied the Lagos house of Chika Egwu Udensi, a crew member of the Arik Air flight W3101, who was arrested with 20 kilogrammes of cocaine at the London Heathrow Airport. The NDLEA moved to the house after they had interrogated pilots and flight attendants of the flight that left the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos for London on Monday night. The interrogation lasted for several hours at the NDLEA head office in Lagos. It was gathered that soon after the interrogation, the NDLEA moved to the suspect’s house in the Ejigbo area of Lagos State. A source, who did not say if there were occupants in the house, told one of our correspondents that the NDLEA men were “currently occupying the house, and we will not leave here until we get all the evidence that we want.” It was gathered that although the operatives had seized the suspect’s Range Rover, the NDLEA was still of the opinion that ...

Lagos under siege?

Image
Pastor William Kumuyi | credits: File copy The Deeper Christian Life Ministry has said that Lagos State is under siege and needs urgent divine intervention. The ministry said the high rate of robbery, cultism, drug abuse and corruption, among other ills, could have totally destroyed the state, but for God’s grace. The church stated this on Wednesday at Gbagada, Lagos, while announcing a city-wide crusade, organised by the ministry in conjunction with the Christian Association of Nigeria and the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria. The 20-day event, which is themed, ‘Supernatural Power of God’s Wonders,’ will begin on September 8 and cover 17 local government areas of the state. The church’s state Moderator, Pastor Joseph Fasanmi, described the event as unprecedented, adding that the ministry’s General Overseer, Pastor W.F. Kumuyi, would be one of the men of God that would minister at the event. He said, “The crusade will be unprecedented because its geographical spread will cover ev...
