Thousands of Burkinabe residing in Ouagadoug, Burkina Faso's capital, took to the streets late on Saturday, January 3, to defend the attempted overthrow of the government the country led by its President, Captain Ibrahim Traore.

Residents trooped to the streets late on Saturday night following reports of an attempted coup against the country’s military-led government.

Demonstrators assembled near the presidential palace in the capital in the dead of the night, which is early hours of Sunday, January 4. They vow to defend President Captain Ibrahim Traoré from external forces which were seeking to destabilize his administration.

According to reports, the purported coup plot was co-ordinated from Lomé in neighbouring Togo. Reportedly, former transitional President Paul-Henri Damiba is its mastermind. But, the coup attempt to was thwarted on the night of Saturday, January 3, 2026, through a joint exercise by Burkina Faso’s defence and security forces.

In the meantime, the Burkinabe government has not released further details on arrests or casualties. But security has been heightened in Ouagadougou as investigations continue.

This is not the first time Traore has expected a challenge his government since he came to.powet.

This is a wake up call to African leaders. When leaders lead by sterling exemplary conduct, execute masses-friendly policies so much si that the citizens fare better and feel protected, they will do anything including risking their lifes to rescue the leader in such situations.

The Burkinabe has shown the new level of followership in African leadership dynamics.
