Baltimore boils, state of emergency declared

The small US state of Maryland has one of the largest concentration of Nigerians. It is no surprise some readers want Mega Mode Media to report the Baltimore riots, the latest protest which turned violent.

Lately, the state has been under tremendous tension following the death of 25-year-old Freddie Gray at the hands of the police.

Police officers in riot gear clashed with rock-throwing youths Monday Baltimore, hours after a funeral for Gray, the black man who has become the nation’s latest symbol of police brutality.
Reporters for The New York Times are covering the spreading violence that broke out Monday in the Mondawmin neighborhood, where friends, neighbors, activists and government officials had gathered to eulogize Gray.

Mega Mode Media monitoring of the situation notices that events in Maryland is fast degenerating; some police officers were attacked, the state's governor and mayor have declared a state of emergency and have also activated the National Guard specially trained for grave emergencies in US.

These actions follow looting and arson against a CVS store. Firefighters efforts to operate a water hydrant with a tube to put out the fire was undermined when protesters cut the tube in many places. Human walls of anti-riot policemen line the main spot of violence as the tenseness escalates. Some arrests have also been made.

Protesters claimed their violent conduct is due to long, built up resentment against insidious racism exhibited by the latest act of police brutality against Gray, leading to an increase in the statistic of blacks felled by US police on flimsy reasons.

Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, Baltimore mayor, announces the curfew from Wednesday, April 28, (today) from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. for an initial period of one week.
