Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao bicker (New York Times)

More about the gloves. The Floyd Mayweather Jr. camp earlier complained about Manny Pacquiao’s gloves, arguing that the padding contained horsehair and thus violated a contract between the fighters.
A similar issue nearly derailed a fight between Mayweather and Marcos Maidana a year ago, when the state commission did not approve Maidana’s Everlast gloves.
This time, the Mayweather camp wanted Les Moonves, the president and chief executive of CBS, to be the arbiter, as the fight contract stipulates when the two sides are at a negotiating impasse. Pacquiao’s side argued that the state commission had already approved the gloves.
Ultimately, Mayweather’s side withdrew its protest. The fighters were allowed to choose their set of gloves.
It amounted to backstage gamesmanship common to boxing, sometimes used to plant doubts or distract the opponent.

Bout highlights:
  • As far as fights of the century go, tonight’s bout between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao seemingly has it all, with two fighters with contrasting personalities, considered the best pound-for-pound boxers of their generation, meeting for the first time.
  • The combatants are projected to split a $300 million payday, and over $100 million is expected to be wagered in Nevada on the outcome.
  • The undercard starts at 9 p.m. E.S.T., but Mayweather and Pacquiao aren’t expected to be in the ring until 11 p.m. at the earliest.
