FG OPENS 2ND CENTRAL COMMAND FOR EBOLA (Daily Trust)
Nigeria has opened a second national emergency operations centre in efforts to boost preparedness against possible re-emeregence of Ebola virus disease.
It comes just after the World Health Organisation declared the country free of the virus after it was contained, and replicates an emergncy operations centre set up in Lagos right after the virus arrived in July.
Minister of state for health Khaliru Alhassan said Thursday morning the certified Ebola-free status must not be taken for granted.
"It should serve as a warning that this current bout break of Ebola still presents a measured threat to Nigeria and the rest of the world until it is contained and eliminated from all countries, particularly from the West African sub-region," he said.
The possibility that Ebola could be reimported into Nigeria remains high, Alhassan said, explaining "It is not over yet."
A national Ebola Preparedness Plan involves helping states activate incident management units in the event of a reimported Ebola, strengthen national preparedness and be ready to respond to a potential outbreak.
As part of the preparedness plan, public messages about Ebola will continue and the ban on transport of corpses across state lines stands, health authorities insist.
They advise enhanced vigilance and seeking immediate attention for cases that involve sudden onset ofnfever, weakness, pains, diarrhoea, vomitting and bleeding.
Vigilance and prompt reporting will enable healthworkers detect any reintroduction of the virus and contain any possible spread.
Ebola killed seven people In Nigeria after it was introduced from Liberia since July. ebola deaths across three worst-hit countries of Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone have exceeded 4,000 among over 8,000 infected.
Some 506 volunteers are set to be deployed to help coordinate Ebola response in those countries, the ministry has said. A first contingent of 250 could ship out as soon as possible.
