Force PPRO Adejobi Faces Fire Over Response To Suspect's Deletion in Police Custody (Crime)

Prince Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Police Public Relations Officer, Force Headquarters, is facing intense backlash from the general public for what's viewed as inappropriate response to an alleged case of extra judicial killing of a young man while in police custody, Erastus, in police custody.

Erastus' mom with the host of Brekete Radio

The mother of the deceased took the case to Brekete Radio, a human rights radio platform days ago, and her testimony of how police colluded and killed her son has gone viral, with many accusing the Abuja Police of complicity in his passing.

Responding, Adejobi said, "My attention has been drawn to this video. The matter is an old one and it has been decided. The FCT command handled the case. The autopsy report cleared the air on this. The boy, who was a cultist and arrested for alleged raping and killing of a young lady in the company of his friend, was never tortured by the police."

He said the Force Headquarters was involved in the investigation then, that Erasmus was a cultist who had been fingered in many crises and alleged killings of some innocent Nigerians in the area.

"He died of asphyxiation, according to the autopsy. Not torture, please," Adejobi said.

He revealed that the autopsy was conducted in the presence of the doctor(s) of the deceased family. "It's unfortunate he died because the police even needed him to unravel some issues and pending cases in the area. May his soul rest in peace," adding, "while we urge Nigerians to always objective perception, understanding of cases, and view issues objectively before running down the police. We didn't kill Erasmus."

The PPRO's response added fuel to the fire. Virtually the tens of hundreds who commented on this statement concluded that indeed, the Nigerian Police is responsible for the demise of Erastus because he said Erasmus passed due to "asphyxiation" which means shortage of air into the body due to cases like drowning, fire, choking and strangulation. It cannot happen in isolation. And this occured in police custody.
