How Eid Observance Went Across Nigeria Today. (Nigeria)

Today marks the Eid El Fitri prayers dignifying the official end of 2026 Ramadan in Nigeria. This year, the Eid was celebrated a day after some countries like the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia celebrated theirs due to the delay in sighting the moon in Nigeria.

This prompted the Sultan of Sokoto and Supreme Head, Supreme Council For Islamic Affairs  (SCIA) Mohammed Sa'ad Abubakar to directt all muslims to continue the fast yesterday till the sighting of the new moon, according to Islamic injunction. Until, it was seen and he thereafter directs Eid prayers to hold today.

 However, this caused drama in some quarters. Sheikh Musa Lukwa held Eid prayers in his mosque in  sokoto on Thursday, March 19, instead of today, March 20, in a sharp disagreement with the Sultan of Sokoto and president, supreme council of Islamic affairs, His Eminence Mohammed Sa'ad Abubakar III. He said since the moon was sighted in Niger Republic, a mere 100 meters away from Sokoto, it was expedient to hold the Eid prayers yesterday as laid down by the Holy Prophet. He said there were times that the moon was first sighted in Lagos or other far flung areas of Nigeria, and it was acknowledged. Not to talk of a moon sighted not far from Sokoto.

However, his logic is not totally right. Niger Republic is another country which ideally, the Sultan had no verifiable institution there to formally confirm such a moon sighting. Unlike in Nigeria where he has appropriate structures to verify this. The sultan had to be extra cautious because he date not make a faulty declaration ons weighty proclamation on when the Eid prayers would hold. The religious directive which will affect over a hundred million Nigerians need vetting before declaration.

Across the country however the Eid festival went smoothly without any drama.

The Kano state's government acted quickly to defuse any tension over who leads this year's Eid prayers in Kano..It announced that the Emir of Ksno, Sanusi Lamido, as the leader. Lady year, there was immense drama over who plays this role between Sanusi and Emir Bayero who was installed after Sanusi was initially deposed. After Sanusi 's reinstatement, tension feigned still as supporters of Bayero was adamant that Sanusi must not lead the Eid prayers. 

Later, during the Eid El kabir celebrations, Kano's government was forced to cancel the durbar because of this tension to avoid violence. 

This year though, tempers have long cooled and Sanusi led the Eid without any inci.dent. 

Meanwhile, President Bola Tinubu attended his Eid prayers at Lagos today. He was accompanied by eminent dignitaries, politicians and cabinet members.

 In reports monitored by mega Mode Media, this was the situation across the country today. Even in Kano which has witnessed some terr0r1st b0mb1ings, the Eid prayers thankfully held with incident.
