NBA Reacts To Judge Who Ordered Lawyer To Kneel In Court (Nigeria)

The facts of this case can be likened to a criminality within criminality.

That a judge reportedly asked Marshall Abubakar, counsel to  Omoyele Sowore, to kneel down during court proceedings.

Sowore is currently standing trial on a two-count charge instituted against him by the Department of State Services (DSS).

The charge occurs following the activist’s August 25 post on X, in which he described Bola Tinubu as a “criminal” in his reaction to the president’s remarks on corruption during a trip to Brazil.

Judges are not known to be frivolous. Their conduct, demeanour and utterances are always clam, measured and elevating.

Maybe that's for judges of old.

Is this the new normal?

Nigerian lawyers disagree. In a statement signed by Afam Osigwe, NBA president today,  the body said the directive from the judge is not a “recognised judicial sanction under our laws and does not align with the standards of judicial conduct expected on the Bench”.
