Why It's Wrong For Hakimi To Refuse ACN Trophy Snatched Back From Senegal (Football)

Achraf Hakimi, the Moroccan international football player is taking people by surprise.

He captained the football team to the last Africa Cup of Nations his country hosted. It lost the trophy to Senegal in a volatile match that saw the Senegalese walking off the pitch at a point I've poor officiating. They returned to finish it after some time.

Afterwards, the Moroccan football authorities lodged an official complaint with CAF, the continental football body. Last week, CAF stripped Senegal of the gold medal and trophy, declaring that Morocco is deemed to have won the match because Senegal walked off. Never mind that Senegal returned to the pitch to finish the match.

In a statement, Hakimi said his mother advised him to reject the trophy, because it is unfair to diminish the achievement of the Senegalese national football team, who he admits won the match fairly.

“We had a chance to win it but we failed to win it. That’s football, sometimes you win and sometimes you lose,” Hakimi said.

The defender stresses that Senegal deserved the victory after their hard work throughout the tournament and that, snatching the trophy from them belittle their accomplishment.

“I respect the decision of Confederation of African Football, but I’m officially rejecting the trophy. I didn’t win the 2025 AFCON. Congratulations to Senegal once again,” he added.

Mega Mode Media feels this is grandstanding though. Hakimi should have voiced this protest when his country's football authorities lodged the complaint with CAF. Not after CAF delivers its judgement.

Speaking out after the decion has b made is futile, this opinion would have carried more weight if he had said it when his country's sports authorities were filing the complaint to stop them.  Plain playing to the gallery.

And, the guy, can't he make a single statement publicly without referencing his mom? We know he is intensely close to his mom and that's admirable. But, stating who ordered him to release the statement in this context makes him look unprofessional.
